Legislator Leslie Kennedy spoke at our club on Tuesday, April 19th, and discussed the important legislation currently coming across her desk. Among other topics, she discussed the limited access to food by our senior citizens, the many aspects of the controversial legislation regarding non-reusable shopping bags.
"It was interesting to learn about Leslie Kennedy's background and experience at the Commack-Kings Park Rotary Club's meeting," commented Joanne Maiorana-Davis, club president. "As our Guest Speaker, she enlightened us with the latest environmental issues of the use of plastic bags in most grocery stores and substituting them with paper bags." In response to the topics of whether a bag tax would help reduce usage and help the environment, versus the application of the potential revenues to help with other local issues, Mrs. Maiorana-Davis went on to say it was "a controversial issue" and that "[e]veryone needs to make a conscientious choice to help keep our environment clean and we need to work together to make that happen."
